As humans, we all have different ways that we think about ourselves - called identities - and we act based on which identity we feel in that situation. This includes changing the way we carry ourselves, the language and words we use, how we act, and the choices we make.

To encourage someone to do an action, harness their identity that best relates to that action or behavior.

  • Some health care workers have an identity as healers or carers. So to encourage adoption of a new practice, consider ways to focus on how that new action ties back to their identity as a healer or carer.

  • Giving someone a new identity, for example ‘a voter’, may encourage them to take actions associated with that identity. (Be careful that the new identity doesn’t conflict with any of their existing identities.)
