The idea of a fresh start or a reset in life is very compelling. Fresh starts are like new beginnings, and people are more likely to start something new on a “fresh start” day such as a Monday, the first day of a month, the first day of a special period (like summer break), or New Year’s Day. It can potentially breakthrough status quo bias by mentally conjuring up images of new beginnings.

To encourage someone to start something new, pick a date or time that feels like it relates to a new beginning.

  • Work with clients to plan the start of a new routine on a Monday or the first day of the next month.

Note: Also make sure there is a plan for how to make the behavior or action a habit (if appropriate) so the plan doesn’t turn into most New Year’s Resolutions and fizzle out.
