Deadlines focus our attention on a specific action that needs to be completed by prioritizing that action within a specific timeframe. Deadlines cut through the noise of the numerous tasks that humans have to complete each day. In cases when the task is mentally uncomfortable to do, deadlines may prevent continued procrastination.

To encourage someone to complete something, set a deadline.

  • Setting numerous smaller deadlines for a larger, complex task may make it more likely the task is completed.

  • Setting deadlines, even when there is not a time-sensitive need for them, can focus attention and prevent procrastination.
